Pieter Bertius (1565- 1629 known as 'Petrus') grew up in Beveren in Flanders and as a young man travelled widely in Europe. He moved to Amsterdam as a refugee religious persecution and attended Leyden University. He was appointed professor of mathematics at Leyden University and became a prolific writer on mathematics, theology and history.  He was related by marriage to cartographers Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van de Keere and after 1600 developed an interest in cartography and mapmaking.  In 1618 he moved to Paris and became Official Cosmographer  to Louis XIII.
