1953 Press Photo Workers remove a jokester's Jolly Roger flag from London statue

This is an original press photo. London -- At left, a huge "Jolly Roger" pirate flag covers the head of the statue of Lord Nelson, Britain's most famous Admiral, on top of a 184-foot column in Trafalgar Square. A daredevil practical joker made the climb up Steeplejacks' ladders, placed on the column for the statue's coronation cleaning. In center, Sydney Larkins and an assistant take the flag off. At right is the column and statue a few minutes after the flag was removed, as sightseers gather to remark on the daring climber's feat.Photo measures 9.25 x 6inches. Photo is dated 05-10-1953.
