DESCRIPTION: This set of 2 cups & saucers was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted brown acorns with green leaves and intricate gold scrollwork on the high white porcelain. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The gold trim on the smooth rim is very bold. The simple handle is painted with solid gold paint.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. 1 saucer has a small smooth flake on the rim; see photo #16. We can find no defects or other damage. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. The gold and paint show no wear. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The cups have a diameter of 3 1/2" and a height of 2". The capacity of the cups is 5 ounces. The saucers have a diameter of 5 1/4" and a height of 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was
one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges
region dating all the way back to the 1700’s.
Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was
carried on by his sons after his death in 1849.
About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used
beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this set is called mark #5 (Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd
edition) which was used from 1890-1932. There is also the J. Pouyat Limoges Studio Decorating mark #9 used 1906-1932. In addition, there is the Wanamaker mark, the “W” inside of a green wreath with ribbon under it which indicates Wanamaker operations in Philadelphia, Paris, and New York. The mark was used from 1900-1920 so this sets the circa to be 1900-1920.
