UPDATE: This is a VERY RARE model being a pre- Chet Atkins Tennessean with only 200 made! I am updating the listing.

This very rare guitar came from of a very large vintage guitar estate we have been selling from for over 3 years now and what we really have here is a very fine 1961 Gretsch Tennessean model 6113 in a walnut finish. The guitar is amazing clean for a 63 year old instrument. The guitar is fully original except for the tuners which were changed to some nice solid Grovers and installed without making any extra screw holes ion the headstock.

A Very Rare 1961 Model 6113
1961 Gretsch Model 6113:
This super-rare Model 6113 has a 15 3/4-inch-wide, 2 1/4 inch-thick body and weighs just 6.60 lbs. Double-bound (white and black) maple body with two painted-on f-holes (with no white border). Three-piece maple/ebony/maple neck with a nut width of just over 1 1/16 inches, a short scale length of 24 1/2 inches and a medium profile. Unbound rosewood fretboard with 21 original medium-to-small frets and neo-classic inlaid pearloid thumbprint (half-moon) position markers. Black-finished headstock with inlaid pearl Gretsch "T-roof" logo. Two-layer (black on white) plastic truss-rod cover secured by three screws. Serial number "41975" impressed into the top edge of the headstock. Individual Grover StaTite tuners with cloverleaf metal buttons. Two Gretsch Hi-Lo'Tron single-coil pickups with silver plastic surrounds and outputs of 2.81k and 2.87k. Silver-gray Lucite pickguard with Gretsch "T-roof" logo in black. Three controls (two volume on lower treble bout and one master volume on cutaway bout) plus two three-way tone selector switches on upper bass bout. Chrome "Arrow-through-G" knobs with cross-hatch pattern on sides. Gretsch "bar" bridge on ebony base and aluminum V-cutout Bigsby ("Gretsch by Bigsby") vibrato tailpiece.

There were less than 200 made of the 6113 with the thicker body (2 1/4 inches deep) no standby switch and no reference to Chet Atkins. Housed in the original Gretsch silver gray hardshell case with five latches and purple velvet lining (8.75).

"The 6113 is a little-known footnote in Tennesseean history, with more than slightly hazy origins... As the 6119 Tennessean was transitioning from the early, single-pickup version to the Electrotone-bodied version in the early 60s, there was apparently some movement at Gretsch HQ to drop the 6119 and instead offer an all-new 6113 model. This reportedly created a bit of kefluffle with Chet Atkins regarding royalties, so the 6113 was shelved and the twin-pickup 6119 Tennessean we know and love picked up where the stillborn 6113 left off. Very, very few 6113 models escaped the factory, but they are out there, confounding Tennessean fans." (Gretschpages.com)

Ed Ball (the author of several fine books on Gretsch guitars) has researched this very rare 'intermediate' model and has confirmed that the first generation of 6113s were produced in 1961 at batch #419xx (100 units) without any reference to Chet's endorsement. NOTE: The serial# of this guitar is 41967.

Another batch was produced at #421XX (a mixed batch with maybe just 50 Model 6113 guitars). The (apparent) final batch of these occurs at #426XX and is probably a smaller 50 unit group. More than one of these has been found with the "6113" indicator on both it's warrantee certificate and OK card.

We originally thought that it was a model 6119 'Chet Atkins' Tennessean but now that this new information has come to light we thought that we should share it with our audience…

The guitar shows hardly any finish wear with some light hard to see surface blemishes and a slight surface scratch or two. There is some very light hard to see laquer checking thru out the entire finish but a person would never know it unless you look 'real' close and hard. The pickguard has a 'very small' crack by the top mounting screw and the pickup rings have cracks but no movement or issues when removing the Hilo-Tron pickups to take pictures.

This guitar was made back before Gretsch started having many binding issues. The binding on this guitar is very solid with no problems. The ivory heel on the back at the neck joint started to flake off a bit when we wiped the guitar down after being in storage for decades. I have the pieces but it would be better to replace that small piece and not that expensive to do. In fact, we could provide that service for you with the fine luthiers we use. It would take about 2 weeks and a minimal fee with the new piece looking like it was original.

All set up and ready to play, I put on some fresh Ernie Ball Slinky .10-.46 round wound strings after cleaning the guitar and seasoning the fretboard. The guitar just came back to life and tunes right up. The rosewood fretboard shows very slight light wear in the first two positions and the original frets are all there with some graduated pitting-wear starting at the first fret and getting less and less wear up to the 7th. fret. Plenty of fret left for sure!

By the way, this guitar plays and sounds just fantastic!

It has a nice playing action which can be easily adjusted up or down.

A very fine example of a very popular Gretsch guitar model.

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for the recent "Miracle in Motor City" Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we just sold Billy Joel's bassist an SG he is in love with. Just last month 2-9-2024, Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that 2-12-2024 we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling guitars and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone, who had an apartment a block down from my house.
