From Here to Eternity
by James Jones

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1951

First Printing (with "A" & Scribner's colophon to copyright page)

Dust jacket is a later issue from 1953 when the book was reduced in price (from $4.50 to $2.69) in conjunction with the Columbia Pictures movie adaptation. The wear at the spine ends of both book & dust jacket suggest that these have been together for quite a while.

Hardcover. 861 pp. 6" x 8-1/2".

Very good in good, price-clipped dust jacket.

Pages are clean & unmarked. Mild, even toning to pages; a bit of foxing to front end paper; book store label to rear pastedown. Binding firm & square. Covers have mild wear to spine ends, at corners & along edges; light bump to top front corner; mild soiling & several small white stains to spine & front (looks worse in photos than to naked eye); minor creasing to fabric at head of spine. Dust jacket has wear along edges with some loss at spine ends & at corners; 2-1/2 inch tear to bottom of front flap fold; tears at several corners & a couple of small tears to spine; wear along spine edges; general soiling & darkening, particularly along flap folds & to rear panel; top corner of front flap is clipped. DJ comes protected by new, archival cover.

A solid copy of the first printing of Jone's debut novel, which is based on his military experiences in Hawaii in the months preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor. The novel won the National Book Award and was the basis for the 1953 film starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra, and Ernest Borgnine.
