One of the best "survivor" novels ever written, THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX details the after-effects of the crash of a cargo plane in the Sahara Desert of northern Africa. The crew and the survivors -- all men -- must devise a means to survive the blistering heat by day, and the bone-chilling cold of night, as well as conserving their meager rations of food and water -- all as they wait for rescue, which may possibly never come, since the loss of a cargo plane carrying a handful of unimportant passengers is of no consequence to anyone -- except the survivors themselves. But one of the survivors is a designer of planes -- well, model planes, actually; and he has an idea that just MIGHT work. . .. Not to give away any more of the plot; but a classic movie was filmed in 1965 based upon the book, featuring JAMES STEWART & HARDY KRUGER & ERNEST BORGNINE & PETER FINCH & Sir RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH & GEORGE KENNEDY & DAN DURYEA (amongst others), which was nominated for an Academy Award and two Golden Globe nominations (and cost the life of veteran stunt pilot PAUL MANTZ); plus a second film was produced in 2004, featuring DENNIS QUAID & GIOVANNI RIBISI & TYRESE GIBSON & HUGH LAURIE & MIRANDA OTTO (amongst others) -- and this edition of THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX includes an "Afterword" about the two films, plus a mock-up illustration of how the final plane was constructed.
