Historically speaking Rolex produce era defining timepieces, creating the cornerstones of horological history. The Day-Date is a key part of the Rolex legacy, and since 1956 has been synonymous with success and luxury. It is colloquially known as ‘the President’ because of the penchant for US presidents to opt for this iconic timepiece.
This example boasts a classic and archetypal 36mm case, fully crafted in solid 18ct yellow gold. Mounted to the case itself is a matching fluted bezel, and secured to the wrist with a ‘presidential’ bracelet, featuring a coronet on the hidden deployant clasp. The dial itself is highly sought after, a pyramid or golf ball design which has texture upon close inspection, protected with a sapphire crystal glass with utilitarian magnifying date cyclops at 3 O’Clock. The serial number dates this piece to 1986, and the reference number ‘18038’ indicates that it features the single-quickset Calibre 3055 movement that originally had a 48h power reserve.
As for the condition, it is overall excellent. This 18038 is a showstopper on the wrist and the ultimate dress watch. It has married the vintage charm with modern day functionality.
Mechanically, it is of course running to the best possible specifications considering the recent full service at Rolex service centre in Jan 2023. It was fitted with a new Sapphire Crystal glass and winding crown. This watch is from 1986, and as you’d expect shows signs of wear commensurate with use as per the photographs. The bracelet shows very little stretch, which is rather hard to come by on vintage gold pieces. It has the period correct features you’d expect, the single quickset movement, factory ‘pyramid/golf ball’ dial, original 8385 clasp with the pink hue, twinlock crown and ‘presidential’ bracelet.
Along with the watch itself comes both inner and outer Rolex boxes, some pamphlets, a Rolex UK service card from January 2023, along with the corresponding breakdown of the work completed. The buyer will also receive an invoice for their purchase and a certificate showing the serial has a clean history on the lost and stolen registries.
