Description

Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejyoku). It is coated with gold, red, orange, and black lacquer. It has a hand-carved floral motif on the front side. It contains a removable top panel that is red on top and black on the underside.

In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and the top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejyoku and Uwajyoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
