A good, rare hunting & fishing knife by Maleham & Yeomans of Sheffield. This is an unusual design which has been weighted at the pommel and cross guard – I believe with lead. I am assuming the purpose was to also act as a salmon priest. The use of a leaping fish in the design of the blade markings would also tend to suggest this.

George Edgar Maleham and Thomas Shillito Yeomans started in partnership around 1871 at the Burgess Works in Sheffield. In 1884, they adopted the Trade Mark of William Bradshaw & Son (a Maltese Cross and the letters “V” and “M’). The partnership was dissolved in 1912. Judging from the font used on the tang, this knife dates to the 1880’s or 90’s. An uncommon item in great condition for its age.

Measures approximately 7 7/8 inches long, point to end of pommel. Trailing point blade with false edge approximately 4 1/8 inches long measured from tip to cross guard. Obverse tang stamped “Maleham & Yeomans Sheffield England”. Reverse tang stamped with an inverted “M”, a “V” and a Maltese Cross. The blade has been stamped “Gillwell” with the “G” in the form of a leaping fish. Rear of blade spine serrated for thumb support. Cross guard and pommel appear to be made of lead, judging from the weight – presumably to help with rear balance and per above, t potentially act as a salmon priest. Two-piece wood scales secured by one central pin. Original leather sheath with good patina.

Age staining to blade, no oxidation. Some minor dings to (lead?) cross guard and pommel. Signs of very slight separation to wood scales at joints. Well fitted. Small tear to lip of sheath.

An unusual antique sporting knife and very usable.
