Up for auction is this Newton, New Jersey Obsolete Banknote, $1.00, 18-- issued by “The Sussex Bank of Newton, New Jersey”.  The Haxby Obsolete Banknote Catalog number for this note is:  NJ-390-G10a and the George Wait number is similar to :  W-1742, but this note has the Red – Orange overprint at the bottom.  This note’s is not Serial Numbered or Signed, Plate Position B, as it was a Remainder of un-issued banknote stock once the bank converted to a National Bank.  There is no Printed Issue Date on this note, as it was never formally issued by the Bank, but I would assume that this was the style $1.00 Obsolete Banknote in use at the time the Bank converted to a National Bank.

According to Haxby, this bank lasted from 1818 – 1865.  Then on March 22, 1865, this bank converted to become “The Sussex National Bank of Newton, New Jersey” receiving Charter #925 from The Comptroller of Currency in Washington D.C., Hugh McCulloch.

This Banknote is printed in 2 Colors Black and Orange - Red, by Baldwin, Bald & Cousland, New York and Bald, Cousland & Co., Philadelphia.  The central vignette depicts Woman & Child on a Load of Hay with 2 Men, 2 Children, 2 Horses and a Dog with a Blacksmith at the far right.  To the left, “ONE” on lathework across the end.  At the right, “1” inside a hexagon and below a “ONE” inside a circle with lathework.  Across the bottom of the note, is an overprint  ONE in orange - red ink as an anti-counterfeiting measure.  The reverse of this note is unprinted, but the orange – red  ENO” shows very distinctly.

This note is a nice surviving “Remainder” from a State Bank turned National Bank!  Obsolete Banknotes that converted to National Banks had more time and made a much greater effort to redeem their outstanding Obsolete Banknote circulation, well into the National Banknote period.

This note has near perfect centering top to bottom and generous amounts of side trim evenly split.  It would be difficult to find a more perfectly centered Obsolete Banknote!  The Banknote Paper is bright white, the Ink pops off the note like it were printed yesterday!  The Banknote itself exhibits lovely original paper wave and embossing.  Over all this is a very pleasing example of a 156+ year old Obsolete Banknote.  I grade this note as a solid Choice Uncirculated or a bit better.  Please look the scans over carefully and judge the quality of the note for yourself before bidding!

I will ship via USPS First Class Mail with Tracking within the United States.
