Hart Mountain Jasper is very rare due to its remote locality and the difficulty in reaching productive collecting grounds (7,000 ft elevation, almost vertical climb of 3,000 feet, heat, snow, sharp basalt rocks, rattlesnakes, etc., etc.). It is found scattered at high elevation within the Hart Mountain Pronghorn Refuge in southeast Oregon. A good day collecting is finding about half of the 7 1/2-pound daily limit of this porcelain jasper. Luckily a few hardy rockhounds are still willing to make the climb and collect a handful of these precious stones for us after the snow melts.
