Kunisada Utagawa 1786-1864 Genji Japan - Dufex Foil Print - FJ Warren England

Print artist. Pupil of Toyokuni I (q.v.); after father's death took name Gototei, then after studying style of Hanabusa Itcho used name Kochoro; in 1844 took name Toyokuni III, even though this 'go' belonged properly to Utagawa Toyoshige (q.v.). The leading 'Ukiyoe' artist of the late Edo period, Kunisada was active for a long time as the central figure in the Utagawa School. He is said to have produced the largest number of works of any 'Ukiyoe' artist. Particularly notable are his stylish, oddly bewitching prints of women of the 1820s and 30s and the fresh, new style of his actor prints.

This originally came from Woodblock Prints.

Dufex printing was a process developed by the company F.J. Warren in the early 20th century, and involves printing images onto aluminium foil-lined paper or cardboard, using UV formulated transparent inks, which allow the reflective shine to be retained. Engraving techniques are then used to add a range of light reflective textures to the foil.

Foil printing is a speciality printing process which uses heat, pressure and metallic paper (foil). This is used to create different shiny designs and graphics on various materials.

The unique thing about foil printing is that they come in a wide selection of colours and finishes. Although the most popular colours are clearly gold and silver foils, they also come in many other colours and effects, such as holographic and pearlescent which all help to replicate the look of precious metals.
