Family Estate Antique

Large COIN SILVER SERVING SPOON

19th Century mid- to late-1800s, very old style

stamp: 'H. WALTER' in rectangle

Pretty script hand engraved monogram “E M”

This is from one of two rare Silversmiths, one pre-Civil War/the other pre-1886: Coin Silver Serving Spoon - One similar is going for $112 on Replacements -- We are pricing at a lower opening bid to give it a new home

Great Used Condition considering age, use, storage, Antique coin serving spoon -- The monogram "E.M." hand chased is for Eva Merrill (1852-1936), the daughter of a prominent Maine ship captain (Look up Reuben Merrill House)

Based on the estate it was in, we believe it could be made by one of two silversmiths -- We lean toward the first because the stamp is one many American silversmiths used in that era.

(1) Our first guess is maker out of Baltimore Maryland, H. Walter, back before the Civil War.  FYI:  Jacob Walter (1782-1869) was active as a Maryland silversmith and watchmaker circa 1810-1840.  It is believed H. Walter was his son, an apprenticed silversmith, but little can be found.  If you know let us know.

(2) The other possibility is Herman Walter, a 19th Century maker out of Halle, Germany in the eastern part of the country.  It has a number 12 – which could be a 12 loth mark for fineness (12/16 equals 750 fine, a value that appears before 1886 (when Coin Silver had to be marked 800).  Any silver out of old Eastern Germany is extremely RARE because when Germany was divided and East Germany put under Soviet Union occupation, nearly all silver was melted down for human survival.  Because Eva’s father was a wealthy shipping merchant with a fleet of clipper ships, it is possible this spoon originated in Europe.

Either way, its a nice big serving spoon, beautifully made, will be a wonderful and unique wedding, engagement, or anniversary gift, birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah...

American Coin silver was made literally from coins, before the silver mines in western USA were discovered after the Civil War.  Silversmiths relied on imports, making sterling very expensive to import... and with gold and silver foreign coins circulating, silversmiths could easily melt down coins to make their goods.
