Japanese Wooden Storage Box Inside 12x12x6cm Vtg Masu Setsubun Festival X94

Description

Japanese Wooden Storage Box

Wooden boxes are a common method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc.

This sturdy, open square box is made for holding beans for Setsubun, but is perfect for storing trinkets or use for display or other crafts/projects. This particular box has metal edges which is an uncommon addition.

Setsubun is a Japanese holiday on the 3rd of February. Traditionally, one throws dried beans at oni (ogres) to chase them, bad fortune, and evil away (mamemaki). There are many ways to celebrate Setsubun depending on the region and whether it is a more modern or traditional version. One such tradition includes eating a long sushi roll called "ehomaki" while facing the lucky zodiac compass direction for that year.
