HISTORY/MARKS:The Hutschenreuther porcelain story began when Karl Magnus Hutschenreuther, 1793-1845, discovered kaolin in northeastern Bavaria in 1814 where he established his company. Upon his death in 1845, his widow Johanna carried on his work with the help of her two grown sons, Christian and Lorenz. A major fired destroyed the factory in 1848. It was quickly rebuilt. His son Lorenz managed the Hohenberg porcelain factory from 1845-1857. He founded his own Hutschenreuther Porcelain Company in Selb in 1856 which became highly successful and 113 years later absorbed his father’s company. C. M. Hutschenreuther also expanded during these years, acquiring a porcelain factory in Arzberg in 1880 and factories in Bohemia, Silesia, and Saxonia in the early 1900s. These factories were lost when Germany was divided after World War II. All of the Hutschenreuther Companies were trend setters of high quality porcelain. The Kunstabteilung (art department) was established in 1917 with Professor Fritz Klee, previously the head of the Royal College of Selb, as the artistic director. The Lion Brand as a mark was designed in 1919 by Professor Klee. In 1922, Carl Werner took charge of the Kunstabteilung and began a creative collaboration with Karl Tutter who joined the company that same year. Hutschenreuther became known for the love of detail, distinctive brilliance of color, and lustrous beauty shown through the decorating of the fine porcelain pieces. The green mark on these pieces is the Hutschenreuther Hohenberg Bavaria mark. Our source for this mark is the website marks4ceramics which cites this mark as used 1950-1963.
