Antique Cow Bone Netting Needles & Spacers English * Circa 1850 These pieces are carved of cow bone (bovine)*. They are tools that were used to produce netting. This was a popular 18th and 19th century lace like fabric that could be embellished with embroidery or overlaid on fabric. Included are 4 netting needles (5 1/2" to 5 7/8" long), 3 netting gauges or spacers (5 7/8" to 6 1/2"long) a bodkin and another netting tool that I'm not sure of the purpose for. The tools are all in great condition with no chips or damage. An 1810 print showing a dress overlaid with netting is shown on p. 69 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries and she shows sets of these netting tools on pp. 71-72. *These items are made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and NOT from an endangered species or an ivory producing species.
