Antique Vegetable Ivory Acorn & Thimble English * Circa 1880s This
antique vegetable ivory thimble holder is carved in the
form of an acorn with a textured cap and smooth bottom.
Inside is a matching thimble, also carved of vegetable ivory.
It's
in
excellent condition with no holes, chips or cracks. It's about an
American child's size 5 (13.4 mm diameter opening). Aside from a small edge chip to the top finial, the
acorn is also
in
excellent
condition. It measures 2 1/4" long.
Vegetable Ivory comes from the corozo (tagua) nut of a South American palm tree. It has the hardness and texture of ivory and a warm honey color. The little spots and ivory like grain are also natural features of this material.
