Dry grain mycelium of the
Daedaleopsis confragosa
Thin-walled maze polypore - 30g

Ukrainian Mushrooms

This fascinating fungus, known for its shelflike or bracketlike fruit body, exhibits a fan-shaped to semicircular form, typically measuring 5–15 cm (2–6 in) in diameter and up to 2 cm (0.8 in) thick. Its upper surface is broadly convex to flat, showcasing a dry, smooth to somewhat hairy texture, often displaying concentric zone lines. Its color palette spans from reddish brown to brown, sometimes taking on grayish tones, and may even darken to blackish in maturity. The cap surface occasionally features an umbo at the point of attachment to the substrate. When moist, the fruit bodies are leathery to corky, transforming into a hard and rigid texture when dry. Internally, the flesh ranges from white to pinkish to brownish and possesses a tough consistency.

On the underside of the fruit bodies, one can observe tiny pores, measuring about 0.5–1.5 mm in diameter. These pores are white to tan to brown, but when bruised, they adopt pinkish or reddish hues. The pore shape varies widely, from circular to elongated, mazelike, or gill-like, adding to the polypore's visual intrigue. The tubes, extending up to 1.5 cm (0.6 in) in length, contribute to its unique structure. Unlike many mushrooms, this species lacks a stalk, attaching directly to the substrate. Despite its captivating appearance, the fruit bodies are inedible, lacking any distinctive odor and possessing a slightly bitter taste.

In microscopic detail, the spore print appears white, with cylindrical spores exhibiting a smooth surface, measuring 7–11 by 2–3 μm. The basidia, responsible for bearing spores, come in shapes ranging from cylindrical to club-shaped, with dimensions of 20–40 by 3–5 μm. Within the hymenium, numerous hyphidia, modified terminal hyphae, are present, measuring 2–3 μm. The hyphal system of Daedaleopsis confragrosa is trimitic, signifying the presence of three types of hyphae in the fruit body: skeletal hyphae, providing structural support and measuring 3–7 μm in diameter; generative hyphae, responsible for new growth, which can be thin- or thick-walled, may contain clamps, and measure 2–6 μm; binding hyphae, thick-walled and extensively branched, are 2–5 μm.

Beyond its biological marvels, this polypore finds application in ornamental paper making. The fruit bodies are pulped, pressed, and dried, resulting in sheets with extraordinary textures and colors, showcasing the endless wonders of nature's craftsmanship.
