Murphy Lab is a newly established laboratory within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville that uses the latest technology based on scientific testing to age guitars (vintage guitars). We specialize in processing that reproduces the appearance and playing feel that has changed over time.

Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader for the development of the Historic Collection, has been active in the aging technique that brings vintage look and feel to new guitars. . Thanks to Tom's passion for vintage guitars and his deep knowledge of vintage guitars, he has successfully recreated the natural lacquer cracks and playing wear of Gibson guitars.

Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed nitrocellulose lacquer from the 1950s and 1960s, which develops cracks called weather check over time, unraveling the process of this change, and testing prototypes of all models. In addition, we have developed a lacquer process that recreates the vintage-like natural weather check.

Murphy Lab was conceived when Tom Murphy led his team at the Gibson Custom Shop and began testing a variety of body shapes, finishes, and aging levels based on prototypes. As a result, it was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to perform aging that pursues unprecedented reality and commitment.

Tom Murphy's presence and many of his artistic works have played an important role in Gibson's history, and will forever be passed down as Murphy Lab.

This model is a model that has been given "Ultra Light Aged", which is the lightest of the four aging levels.
It has been carefully stored in a case, and the weather checks, paint peeling, and scratches that have occurred over time have been reproduced.
The unobtrusive weather check is hard to see from a distance, but once you hold it, it's so realistic that you'll be overwhelmed by its atmosphere.
You will be able to feel the ``real'' vintage texture that will not make you feel that it is new.

The 1968 Custom has the same classic maple top and mahogany top specifications as the Les Paul Standard.
While it has the weight of a mahogany sound, the maple top gives it a crisp sound.

The Murphy Lab series has a rolled neck with rounded edges for improved grip and playability.
