This auction is for the RARE VINTAGE 4x5-INCH BLACK AND WHITE DOUBLEWEIGHT SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT OF EARLY PHYSIQUE MODEL TOM MATHEWS SHOT AND PRINTED IN THE EARLY 1950s BY LEGENDARY PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHER BOB MIZER OF ATHLETIC MODEL GUILD.
TOM MATHEWS (often misspelled MATTHEWS) was one of the
most popular of the early physique models, posing during the “golden age” of
physique photography for KOVERT OF HOLLYWOOD (Frederick Kovert), ATHLETIC
MODEL GUILD (Bob Mizer), LYLE (Lyle Frisby) and BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES
(Bruce Bellas). Although Mathews is little known today, he was a
contemporary of those early popular models ANDY KOZAK, FORRESTER MILLARD,
JOHN MILLER, KEITH STEPHAN, DALE CURRY, GENE MEYER and LEONARD CHAMBERS.
This rare print is in EXCELLENT condition, and it bears an AMG stamped notation 01 OR 011 or some variant verso, as shown in my second scan, and it looks like part of the backstamp may have faded away. I'd confidently date this print to the early 1950s era, given the paper on which it is printed, its tonality and clarity. Mizer was still at the peak of his creative powers during this era, and this is an example of his inspired work at its early best.
