Vanilla planifolia is a species of vanilla orchid which is native to Mexico and Belize. The Vanilla Orchid prefers tropical or subtropical climates, but can be grown indoors in most areas. It grows into a long vine eventually producing flowers that need to be hand pollinated to produce the famous vanilla bean which has become well known throughout the world as a flavouring agent.
Starts flowering between 3-5 years.
Easy to grow and maintain once established in the subtropics.
Needs a tree, post or fence to climb on.
Needs to be grown in semi shade for best results.
Vines grow only during the hot wet months generally in the subtropics.
