Bespoke (‘seaside’ throne) high-back chair, made from architectural salvage timber

I originally made the throne to sell in a gallery elsewhere in the country. It was then used as a display piece for my wife’s gallery on the Roseland. After the gallery closed we happily kept the throne, but partly as we’ve never really had anywhere to properly use or ‘display’ it in our current property and now, in advance of a house move, where it won’t really fit in, I have very reluctantly (very reluctantly indeed) decided to offer it for sale.

• The throne would make an impressive and commanding statement piece in a coastal themed dwelling, beach house or stylish contemporary home.

The piece was designed and made using reclaimed timber and found objects (I still have the original visual notes, thumbnail sketches and plans). It is of extremely solid construction and uses mainly peg joints and marine glue throughout.

• With the odd shapes and uneven surfaces of the wood I used, I actually had to make a kind of cradle or jig first to enable me to have something to attach the pieces to and hold them in place, in precisely the correct position, while I gradually constructed the throne.

Given the nature of the materials used and the construction style its difficult to talk about the ‘condition’ as such, in conventional terms. There are some ancient woodworm holes (which I actually love in such old timbers), particularly on the two large back vertical oak ‘pillars’ (which are rock solid) BUT this is genuinely ancient and the empty holes were present before the throne was made as these specific timbers were found in a cow byre on a very old farm in Shropshire. However, the timbers have been woodworm treated several times as a precaution. That was some years ago, there has never been any new woodworm and the timbers remain unaffected, sound and extremely strong.

Sizes: Height (to top of highest vertical ‘pillar’) 216cm, width (max width to outer edge of arms) 74cm, depth 72cm.

The piece originally cost around £3,000 to make, in terms of time (approximately 8 weeks) and materials.

Viewing and inspection is highly recommended and welcomed.

• PLEASE NOTE: Although photographed outside the throne is NOT for external use, but internal only. (Also, the antique metal fishing floats and shell are not included).
