Super rare and looks like it may be Japanese but not 100% sure. Has a lacquered style coating and hand marbling done in a mix of colours - red/orange, gold/silver, green, blue/purple etc.
The top of the mushroom twists off (not threaded though) where sewing needles/pins can be kept inside the handle.
This has been used as can be seen by the photos but nonetheless is a beautiful example of a darning mushroom and extremely unique. Have never seen another one like this.
Not sure of date but it may well be early to mid 20th century. But I'm not an expert so use your discretion to decide. :)
Measurements (are approximate):
Length - 5.5 inches / 14 cm
Diameter of Mushroom Top (from the underside) - just under 3 inches / 7 cm
Would suit any vintage, retro, mid century, mid century modern, MCM, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s etc enthusiast or home decor.
