QUALITY, vintage to retro glassware ... DOMINION
Glass Co, DOMGLASS, LIBBEY ... Van Pak.
Offered here is a Matching-Set of -
VINTAGE-Retro Dominion-Glass & Van-Pak - Salt & Pepper Shakers. The
Shaker Bottles are Crystal-Clear Glass with Bright-Orange & Sunshine-Yellow Floral Graphics fired-onto the sides of each shaker-bottle - barely-gently used
condition.
Shaker-Bottles -
ALL glass surfaces
are - highly-glossy, shiny and clean - perfect threads. There are NO obvious chips, cracks, nor flea bites - NO wash-hazing,
fading, scratches, nor rubs. The glass is crystal-clear type - a little haze to the inner surface of one bottle - likely due to the fine clingy pepper dust.
The fired-on, Bright-Orange & Sunshine-Yellow Floral Graphics are highly-glossy as well. The graphics
depict stylized large floral motifs - the petals are solid colour (bright pumpkin-tangerine orange); the eyes (center) are stippled - giving the sense of colour and texture or real flowers. Minimal flecks of colour loss to the graphics - the pepper bottle has slightly more fleck-loss to its colour
Each Shaker-Bottle has
a molded back-stamp,
on the base - "VAN PAK; CANADA; boxed-1 7. 2" and
Each Shakers Bottle measures ~ - maximum diameter (middle) is ~1 3/4"; base diameter of 1 3/8"; opening of 1 1/8" at the top of the bottle threads; 3 1/8" in height alone.
Shaker Lids or Caps -
Less commonly found - the Shaker-Lids are made of food-safe, opaque, plastic material tinted White. Each Lid is marked - "HONG KONG" - within. The Pepper Cap has a little discolouration, from contact with pepper, on the inside-bottom and marking on the lower edge.
The Lids are
perforated, in the shape of - Salt - "S" and Pepper - "P" - to dispense, and are slanted-top, threaded, twist-on
style.
Each Shaker Cap measures - ~1 3/8 - 1/2" across the bottom edge; 1 1/4" top face; maximum height 7/8", minimum height 3/4".
The Lidded
Shakers each measure - ~3 5/8" in height, maximum with lids on; 3 3/8-1/2 low side of cap's
slant height; maximum diameter (middle) is ~1 3/4"; base diameter of 1
3/8"; opening of 1 1/8" at the top of the bottle threads.
SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –
Dominion Glass Co. – Van Pak -
This
item is attributed to the Wholesaler - Van Pak - likely produced in the 1960’s.
The
Dominion Glass Co was founded in ~1900 and became a MAJOR Canadian glassmaker -
however, over the years, it changed names through sales to Domglass then
Libbey, others as well ... finally associated with the wholesaler, Van Pak. Pieces are marked with a backstamp of a
"capital D" and-or a "small D within a diamond", on the
button - later runs were stamped with "Van Pak" as well.
Plastic
of this era could have been made from a variety of materials – from more robust and heavier in weight -
Bakelite, to resin, or heat-resistant resin, to light-weight plastics. Van
Pak related items are often stamped “HONG KONG” on plastics – caps,
lids, handles, spouts …
This Shaker-Set is referred to as "Van Pak - Salt & Pepper
Shakers" - likely produced in the 1960’s or into the 1970’s.
Chromed plastic caps were first available in the early 1970’s - paired
with opal-white milk-glass bottoms.
Chromed or metallic caps were most common - but tended to be prone to corrosion. Colour-Tinted plastic caps are much less common – most found are Black-Tinted caps.
