1948 : 3rd/4th Impression of First Edition Thomas The Tank Engine, Illustrated by Alexander Reginald Payne

Direction of train facing shed, no telegraph poles, etc.,

Payne is not usually recognised as one of the illustrators after Middleton, but he was the one who portrayed Thomas  as he is known throughout the series of books. Payne died aged 38. His illustrations were  later copied/improved by C Reginald Dalby from 1950 onwards.

Fat Director printed here; prior to Fat Controller in later editions of Awdry's Railway Series.

This is an early impression of the First Edition.

Inscription on inside cover dated April 1948.

Companion Book 'The Three Railway Engines' is the only book listed at rear which was the First book in the Series.

The 3rd Book 'James The Engine' First Edition was published September 1948.

So this Thomas The Tank Engine book is either August 1947 (3rd Impression) or February 1948 (4th Impression).

No dust jacket present.

Glue to back strip and majority of the sewing has failed, as such pages are loose but all present. This could easily be aesthetically repaired.

A rare early Edition of this iconic Railway Series by Rev Awdry.
