Brief Portion of the Introduction:

     Few regions of the United States figured more prominently in the Civil War than the great Valley of Virginia, or the Shenandoah.  From the conflict's initial weeks until its final months, opposing armies struggled for control of the strategically vital region.  It was, as a Union officer remarked, "a sort of a back alley, parallel to the main street wherein the heavy fighting must go on."
     The "back alley" angled from the southwest of the northeast between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains for a distance of 165 miles.  The Valley served as the granary of the Confederacy and a natural warpath for both armies.  The region's farms and mills fed and clothed Confederate troops, and three times Southern forces raced northward, down the Valley, in invasions of Northern soil.  The Shenandoah figured significantly in nearly all the major campaigns of the eastern theater....
