A step up transformer is generally the best way to amplify the signal from a moving coil cartridge from extremely tiny up to very small. It adds no noise at an early stage, something that active amplification can struggle with. The result of this is a cleaner signal with less small details obscured.
I have a well regarded phono stage that originally cost £3500, adding this and setting the phono stage on MM was a very worthwhile upgrade. Ultimately I was so impressed by this SUT I got an even better one. Cost a lot more than this one though!
It’s less than two years old, in near mint condition and working as well as new. It steps up 1:10 making ideal for most low/medium output, 100Ω impedance MCs. It comes with a decent cable from TVA which has an earth at both ends. There’s a ground life switch which can help with earth hums. It cost me £720 at the start of last year and that’s what it still retails for.
