Native American Horsehair Pot KOKOPELI DANCERS by WEST MOUNTAIN Laguna/Cochiti Pueblo

About Native artisan West Mountain:West Mountain was born in 1975 and is a member of the Lizard Clan. He is half Laguna Pueblo and half Cochiti Pueblo. West is extremely proud of his heritage and participates in the traditions and ceremonies of his people. He was inspired to learn the art of working with pottery from several family members and various friends. He comes from a family that reinforces the traditional ways of their ancestors. Art has always come naturally to West. When he was a young boy he drew many kachinas and fine line designs on paper. Eventually, he got the idea to put his work on pottery. He has been crafting pottery since 1998.

West Mountain specializes in hand crafting Santa Clara pottery. He draws sgraffito designs of highly respected kachinas on his pottery. West uses his steady hand to etch his finely detailed warriors, maidens and fine line designs of a time when life seemed simple. Then, he accents his pottery with turquoise paint or stones to add flare to his art. His favorite kachina to create is the Poli Kachina, otherwise known as the Butterfly Kachina, because of the special dances they perform and their beauty. There are over 300 recognized kachinas, each representing a spiritual being believed to guide the Native American Indian on the right path of life.

3.5" high, 4.5" across at widest, 2.5" base. 13,5" around at shoulder. Design wraps around pot. Signed on base with the carved initials WM and LC [for Laguna- Cochiti]This is a very collectible piece.

Stunning- This piece is slightly different from West Mountain's more commonplace pots in that it has a wide band of deep turquoise paint at shoulder, with dancing Kokopelis carved over the top of them. The natural horsehair designs [real horsehair is stuck into the clay and burns away, leaving black marks] are on the rim and lower 3/4 of vase.

There are 6 Kokopeli figures, each different, each hand carved.

Bordering turquoise paint band is a double band of brown paint with center carved lines

Completely unique and one of a kind

Please note the following, dear fellow shopping enthusiasts:

I strive to give you the best service possible. I am not a dealer or professional, just a lifelong collector and enthusiast. I only list items that I think are unique and of good quality. I represent my items as accurately and clearly as I can, and believe it is always better for you to have too much information than not enough! Please ask any questions before bidding, I will happily respond.

Remember, these are vintage items and will have reasonable signs of age and wear which only adds to their personality, appeal and "funky vintage-ness". They are not in their original boxes unless noted. I do not excessively clean items or remove age patina, as I want to leave that option for the buyer.

I will promptly ship your item within 1 business day and post great positive feedback for you once payment is received.

Go Green! I try to re-use clean, almost-new shipping boxes when possible.

I will gladly combine shipping on multiple items for you.
