A vintage Sal-King Fly Reel by Clarkson Company of Belmont, CA circa the mid to late 1940’s. This fly reel was produced by the same Clarkson Company that produced the aluminum Castey baitcasting reel.  This lightweight anodized aluminum, single-action reel spins freely, with 100-yard capacity.  The click is strong and loud.  The frame is 3 ½ inches in diameter, the spool is 3 inches in diameter and the spool width is 1 ¼ inches. The reel has minor paint loss, surface wear, and visible line residue on the spool. This unique California Reel should be considered very uncommon to rare, making it a nice addition to any vintage fly reel or California reel collection.   (See more of the Castey and Sal-King reels’ history in the January 2020 issue of ORCA’s The Reel News.)  Although the reel has no connection to the Pflueger Sal-Trout fly reel, it would have been a competitor to similar reels by Pflueger or Shakespeare.
