Limoges Guerin Cider Pitcher 6 1/8" Tall Hand Painted Red Cherries 1900-1932

Limoges Guerin Cider Pitcher 6 1/8" Tall Hand Painted Red Cherries 1900-1932

Elegant Decorative Stately 6 1/8" Tall CIDER PITCHER from William Guerin & Co. Limoges, France, Smooth Rim, Gold Handle & Dark Matte Green Color Bands,  Hand Painted RED CHERRIES & GREEN LEAVES w/Gold w/Artist Signature, circa 1900-1932

DESCRIPTION:  The artist, Jannie S. Randolph, was very talented with wonderfully realistic hanging red cherries nestled among the green leaves.  There are lighter red ghost cherries and bluish green ghost leaves to give depth to the painting.  The glossy area behind the cherries is painted in washes that gradually change from red to light orange to finally creamy yellow.  The green parts are a dark matte green.  The gold bands give it an art deco look and are outlined in black.

The sturdy handle is smooth and painted with a bright gold paint.  The artist did a wonderful job on designing this cider pitcher.

CONDITION:  While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb.  The only issues are a spot of gold wear on the corner of the handle (shown in photo #10) and dark smudges on the matte green (shown in photo #15).  We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs.  There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors  other than the gold on the handle previously mentioned and no crazing.  Look in the photos to see this.  The lack of utensil scratches on the pitcher attests to the high quality of the porcelain china.  This is very sturdy weighing 37.5 ounces.

DIMENSIONS:  The cider pitcher has a maximum diameter of 7 1/4" and a height of 6 1/8".  The measurement from the handle to the opposite side is 9 1/4".  Its capacity is 10 cups.

HISTORY/MARKS:  William Guerin, Limoges France, established his firm in 1873 and exported large quantities of chinaware primarily to the USA.  After he acquired the Jean Pouyat Company and WWI caused porcelain production to be drastically curtailed, the merged companies were acquired by Bawo & Dotter in 1920.  The green underglaze backstamp on this piece is identified as mark #3 and  was used in the 1900-1932 time period according to Mary Frank Gaston in her book, Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition.  The artist's signature, Jannie S. Randolph, in also on the bottom.
