On January 15, 1986 Piedmont Airlines added two more cities, Pensacola and West Palm Beach, to its growing list of points served in Florida. One aircraft, a Fokker F-28, was prepositioned at Pensacola, made a stop at Orlando, and continued to West Palm Beach. This same aircraft made the return flight to Orlando. A later flight, also an F-28, made the inaugural flight to Pensacola from Orlando.

No cachet was provided for the inaugural mail.

This cover was one of only 26 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Piedmont Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to West Palm Beach, Florida (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the First Flights by United States Airlines(FFUS) Section of the American Air Mail Catalogue as PI-D108S.

The Orlando Philatelic Mail Clerk autographed the cover.

The USAir (later renamed USAirways) purchase of Piedmont Airlines was approved by the Department of Transportation. The sale was completed in October 1987. The two airlines operated separately until August 5, 1989, when all operations and schedules were integrated. Piedmont ceased to exist on August 5.

US Airways was a major American airline that ceased to operate independently when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for US Airways and American Airlines on April 8, 2015.
