One of the most recognisable styles of maker's marks worldwide on contemporary jewellery,is the Italian maker's mark.

In 1968 revisions to the maker's marks modified the frame-shapes and the order sequence of core elements. The frame-shape was redesigned as an elongated hexagon with pointed ends. The revised order of the core elements placed a 5-pointed star onthe left, the maker's registration number in the centre, and the two regional identification numbers in one to three digits. While in many regions today there are four-digit maker's identification numbers in use.
