Features

System Overview: The Sony DAV-FR1 is integrated system which includes a slot-loaded, 5-disc DVD/SACD/Video CD/Audio CD changer/receiver, floor-standing front and surround speakers, a matching center channel, and a twin-drive subwoofer. The supplied remote control can control this unit, plus multiple brands of TVs and cable boxes.

Disc Changer System: The DVD changer section of the integrated receiver/DVD changer consists of a playing unit and a "stocker", which transports the discs to the disc slot and playing unit. When discs are not being played, they are stored in the "stocker". Note: You cannot use 3-inch (8 cm) discs in this unit.

S-Master Digital Amplifier: This unit is powered by the exclusive S-Master Full Digital Amplifier. It's high-efficient design allows for minimal heat, and takes up 1/4 of the space of conventional amplifiers.

Super Audio CD: The DAV-FR1 is equipped with a DSD (Direct Stream Digital) decoder to enable SACD playback. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second, allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. Many Super Audio CDs have multi-channel and 2-channel SACD playback layers as well as a conventional CD playback layer. In the Stop mode, you can select which layer of the disc you wish to play.

Progressive Scan Output: This unit may be set to output a progressive scan or interlaced video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan picture quality is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video input.

Surround Back Decoding: This function lets you select the decoding mode for the surround back signals of the multi-channel input stream. When you select "Auto" and the input stream contains 6.1-channel information, the appropriate decoder is applied to decode the surround back signal (Dolby Digital EX, DTS Matrix, or DTS Discrete decoder). When you select "Matrix", Dolby Digital EX is applied to decode the surround back signal regardless of the 6.1-channel (or 5.1-channel) information. When "Off" is selected, no surround back decoding is performed. Note: The surround back channel output is preamp level only, and requires a self-powered speaker or a separate amplifier and passive speaker.

Auto Format Direct: The auto decoding function automatically detects the type of audio signal being input (Dolby Digital, DTS, or standard 2-channel stereo), and performs the proper decoding if necessary. This mode presents the sound as it was recorded/encoded, without adding any effects (reverberation). If there are no low frequency signals, such as Dolby Digital LFE, it will generate a low frequency signal for output to the subwoofer.

2-Channel Stereo: In addition to the surround modes, you can select the 2-Channel Stereo mode. This mode outputs the sound from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer only. Standard stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing. Multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to two channels.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 99 albums and each album can have a maximum of 250 tracks.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. Additionally, you can rotate any selected image 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 99 albums and each album can have a maximum of 250 images.

Resume Play: This feature allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared from memory if you remove the disc, change the play mode, change the setting on the Setup Menu, or press the Stop button a second time.

PBC (Playback Control) Playback: PBC playback allows you to play Video CDs interactively by following the menu on the TV screen.

Audio DRC: The Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) feature is useful for watching movies late at night by letting you narrow the dynamic range of the sound track. This feature is also known as Late Night or Midnight Mode, and applies only to Dolby Digital-encoded soundtracks.

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for discs using Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. Parental Control allows you to restrict playback of any disc according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password. Using the same registered password, Custom Parental Control allows you to set playback restrictions for a specific disc. You can set the same Custom Parental Control password for up to 25 discs.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the unit off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 10, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90 minutes.

Display Dimmer: You can set the display to one of two brightness levels.

Tuner: This system has a PLL quartz-locked digital synthesizer AM/FM Tuner. You can store up to 20 FM and 10 AM station presets so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. You can assign a name of up to 8 characters for each preset. FM tuning is done in 0.1MHz steps and AM tuning is done in 9kHz or 10kHz steps.

Speakers

Subwoofer: The DAV-FR1 system is equipped with a Digital Direct Twin-Drive subwoofer, which features two 6-3/8" cone woofers in a bass-reflex enclosure. One woofer fires toward the front, while the other woofer is down-firing. The main unit provides two separate amplifier channels for the subwoofer, each with an output of 100 watts. The subwoofer has twin 16' speaker wires hardwired to the enclosure.

Front/Surround Speakers: The bookshelf front and surround speakers (SS-TS20) each use a 2-7/8" fullrange midrange driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The speakers feature a set of spring clip terminals on the back panel. The speaker can be placed upright on its base on a bookshelf or table. An M5 threaded insert is included in each speaker for optional wall mounting brackets or stands. The dimensions of the speakers are: Width=3.515", Height=8.685", Depth=3.0", Weight=1 pound, 9 ounces.

Center Channel Speaker: The center channel speaker (SS-CT44) uses a 2-7/8" fullrange driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The speaker has an integrated non-adjustable stand, and a set of rear-mounted spring clip terminals for use with the supplied speaker wire. The driver is covered by a non-removable, dark gray cloth grille. No provisions are included for wall mounting the center speaker.

Speaker Setup: To obtain the best possible sound, you can set the unit for the size of speakers you have connected and their distance from the listening position. You should also adjust the level and balance of the speakers to the same level using the test tone. You can indicate if you have placed the surround speakers behind or to the side of the listening position. If you do not connect the center or surround speakers, you can configure the unit to adjust the output signals to the connected speakers. After setting the front speaker distance, the default for the other speakers is set accordingly. The available distance settings for the speakers are as follows:

Front: 3 to 23 feet in 1 foot increments

Center: can be moved up to 5 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot increments)

Surround: can be moved up to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot increments)

Surround Back: can be moved up to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot increments)

Video-shielding: The front speakers, surround speakers, center channel and subwoofer are video-shielded, allowing them to be placed near your television without causing picture distortion.

Speaker Wiring: Each length of supplied speaker wire has tinned wire on one end, and a color-coded proprietary plug on the other for easy hookup. The color-coded plugs are white (Front Left), red (Front Right), blue (Surround Left), gray (Surround Right), and green (Center). The subwoofer's attached twin speaker wires have purple plugs.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The DAV-FR1 comes with a remote (RM-SP350) that is pre-programmed to operate this system and a number of functions on different brands of TVs and cable boxes. The remote has a slide-down panel that reveals more controls.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Speaker Outputs: The changer/receiver uses color-coded 2-pin proprietary jacks for all 5 channels and the 2 subwoofer outputs. Speaker wires, terminated with color-coded plugs, are supplied. The speaker plugs can be removed for attachment to other speaker wire if desired. The plugs will fit virtually any commercially available speaker wire from 18 to 22-gauge.

Surround Back Output: The DAV-FR1 supplies a preamp output for the surround back channel. If you wish to add a surround back speaker to this system, you will need a self-powered speaker or a separate amplifier to power a passive speaker. The surround back channel is active when you input a 6.1-channel signal such as Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES Discrete or DTS-ES Matrix. With the Surround Back decoding mode set at "SB Matrix", you will also hear audio from the Surround Back channel with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel signals and some 2-channel sources.

Audio Inputs: This unit features two analog (stereo RCA) audio inputs, labeled "Video In" and "SAT", plus an optical digital input labeled "SAT". These inputs allow you to input audio signals from a VCR or satellite receiver. If you connect the satellite receiver via the digital input, you can input the audio signal from the TV through the system if desired.

Video Monitor Outputs: You can connect your TV to the system via composite, S-Video, or component video cables, depending upon the type of video input on the TV. The component video outputs can be set to progressive scanning for a better picture, if the connected TV is compatible with HDTV or EDTV signals.
