ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE SALT GLAZED
STONEWARE JUG
MADE BY THE WEST TROY POTTERY
WEST TROY, NEW YORK
1850 - 1880

Antique primitive salt glazed stoneware three-gallon size jug, made by the West Troy Pottery, West Troy, New York, 1850 - 1880.

During the 175+ years stoneware was being manufactured in America, the amazing West Troy Pottery was one of a few potteries that seemed to have served as a training ground for many of the best artisan potters in stoneware history. The pottery made there, was for the most part, stamped as this crock is stamped;

WEST TROY
        N.Y.
  POTTERY

West Troy Pottery used the pottery name as opposed to the pottery owners name(s). This made the knowledge of exactly who had made the stoneware and when somewhat of a challenge. We have always surmised, that with the impasse of potters coming and going from this pottery, that the use of the pottery name as opposed to one potter's name was more appropriate and accepted. They were ALL great potters! The saving grace is, records of the pottery and knowledge of who exactly was working there is out there if you look. Collectors have fawned over the beautiful florals for years. There is long history of stoneware that's sitting in America's finest collections, that was made at the West Troy Pottery.

A list of legends of stoneware that once worked in West Troy would include early potters such as Sanford Perry and William Warner, but later, when a pottery competitively needed to turn out beautiful artisan work like this jug, the second-generation potters would take the reins. A brief list includes two sons of Augustus Smith, the early Albany potter, Lewis and Frank Smith, who were potters there, beginning in 1848, and eventually owned the pottery. George Seymour, son of Albany potter, Israel Seymour, owned the pottery before selling it out to the Russell brothers. These second-generation potters/owners were expert artisans and made BEE autiful stoneware.

John and A. J. Russell were young entrepreneurs and purchased the pottery in 1867. Under the Russell brother's ownership, the work only got more beautiful. We believe this jug was made during or just after the Civil War, just a good guess.

This is a three-gallon size jug with a sturdy strap handle. The jug is well potted and has a nice shiny sheen from the final salt glaze coat. A complete and professionally made example.

On the face is this frond of leaves created by hand and with use of the rich cobalt blue glaze. Really well done.

Above the frond is the stamped capacity (3) for the gallons the jug will hold and the oval maker's stamp, both washed in blue glaze as highlight.

The jug is 16 1/2" tall and 10" wide. There are glaze flakes/chips off the lip and some on the handle's edge. There is a hairline on the handle and some staining from use. This aside....a BEE autiful jug!

A work of art from West Troy Pottery and the artisan potters at work. Delivered safely to your door in a few days.

ENJOY * ENJOY * ENJOY!!!!
