Exquisite Decorative NIPPON VASE, Hand Painted RIVER SCENES, Extensive DARK BROWN MORIAGE, unmarked from Japan, circa 1911-1918
DESCRIPTION: This vase was skillfully hand painted w/delicate extensive dark brown moriage. The 5 river scenes are drawn nestled in their cartouches on the white porcelain. The top rim is trimmed in brown. The inside of the vase is the white porcelain. We love the brown brickwork that makes the cartouches appear to be windows to view the river scenes. This looks beautiful and can be used daily to enjoy on your favorite flowers or as a beautiful display item. See the photos.
CONDITION: The condition of this decorative vase is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There is no age appropriate wear to the paint. Please refer to the photos to see overall how classically beautiful this vase is.
DIMENSIONS: The squat 2 handled vase has a maximum diameter of 5 5/8" and a height of 4 1/4". The base has a diameter of 3 5/8".
HISTORY/MARKS: The earliest Nippon pieces were unmarked. This vase has no mark, but we believe we can see the faintest hint of a blue mark that appears to have been mostly removed using a very fine sandpaper that scratched the clear glaze and removed the mark. In ABC’s of Collecting
Nippon Porcelain, Joan Van Patten attributes the marked Nippon to the 1911-1918 time period. Our guess is that this piece had the blue Maple Leaf (Noritake) mark on it. We had hoped that the camera would reveal more of the mark, but it did not. See the last 2 photos. We have now seen the same mold vase, same size, painted in the same manner that is clearly marked with the blue Nippon M-in-Wreath from Noritake. This mark is cited in ABC’s of Collecting
Nippon Porcelain by Joan Van Patten as mark #47. used in the 1911-1918 time period. (So our original "guess" was incorrect, but was a different Noritake mark from the same time period!)
