Royal Bayreuth 7 5/8" Pitcher Hand Painted Tavern Scene Yellow w/Gold 1902-1930
DESCRIPTION: The
beautiful and functional pitcher features a tavern scene of 2 elegantly dressed gentlemen toasting each other and on the back a painting of the tavern's crown sign. Each scene is backed by appropriate washes. The rim is trimmed in brown as is the line between the yellow of the bottom and the scenes. The embossed, attached handle is painted in the same bright, cheerful yellow.The pitcher is gracefully molded with 2 rings near the bottom and concave ridges running up to accentuate the spout.
CONDITION: While
this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is
superb. There are no rubbings, chips, nicks, hairlines, or repairs to
this stunning piece. See the condition in the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The pitcher is 6" handle to the opposite side with a top diameter of 3", a bottom diameter of 4 1/2" and a height of 7 5/8".
HISTORY/MARK: G.C.F. Greiner (of Kloster Veilsdort) and Johann Schmidt (of Coburg) sought a concession from the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II to build a true porcelain factory in Tettau, Bavaria in 1793. The factory was established in 1794 and by the 1910’s employed over 600 people producing high quality white porcelain using the kaolin in Thuringia. Many of their products were exported to the USA under their Royal Bayreuth trademark. The company survived both of the World Wars and their associated economic problems and still produces today. PM&M (porcelainmarksandmore website) cites this mark as mark #5/6-24 used 1902-1930.
