「男子教育出世双六」 明治中期 楊斎延一画(楊洲周延の門人)

Published period:
the mid-Meiji period

Print description:
After the Meiji Restoration, many common people who were freed from the class system began to aspire to success and advancement. This sugoroku (a Japanese board game similar to Snakes and Ladders) served as an example of the best path to success at the time and played a role in enlightening youth through play.

The game starts from "Birth of a Boy" and, depending on the roll of the dice, progresses through various stages, including kindergarten, school entry, sports day, horsemanship, bird hunting, overseas travel, graduation, art study, samurai activities, academic study, speeches, and banquets, ultimately leading to the final goal of "National Diet Building."

The "National Diet Building" space conveys the idea that even if a person is born with talent, it is crucial to continue learning and self-improvement to make the most of that talent. It emphasizes the importance of becoming a member of the National Diet (parliament) and contributing to society and the country.
