Hudson River Marquetry Inlay Portrait Scene by Jeff Nelson. This beautiful wood inlay picture is titled “Hilltop Couple” and was created and signed by Jeff Nelson of Hudson River Inlay. It appears to be a scarce figural piece. Although Nelson made numerous golfers and several fishermen, scenic pictures with figures are rarely found. It is completely made with wood and many rare and unusual species wood were used. All woods used are listed on the back of the picture along with the areas in the picture they are used, and only a few are dyed for color.

The man and woman are standing on a hilltop looking out toward distant lands. The woman wears a long dress and carries a ribboned hat. The man wears a suit with white shirt and tie. Woods used are skillfully cut utilizing the unusual grains and figuring of the wood to portray movement or a different view of certain areas. Green foliage and deep pink flowers are in the foreground with hills and rocks in the middle. By artist intent, one flower has slipped the bounds and breaks through the narrow border that surrounds the scene. The narrow border was created to restrain and control the beautiful scene.

Jeff Nelson, one of the founders of Hudson Valley Inlay, is the company’s principal designer. Nelson’s wood inlay work began as a hobby in San Francisco in 1979. Trained at the renowned San Francisco Art Institute, he has contributed greatly to the renaissance that marquetry is enjoying today. Jeff has been featured in numerous articles and books about marquetry, and has received many prestigious awards. Hudson River Inlay states that they are committed to creating the world’s most enchanting and enduring marquetry in order to ensure that this art form will be treasured for generations to come.
