This number itself is highly significant to Navajo tradition and culture. There are 4 seasons, four directions,  The original 4 clans, and ofcourse the four colors. These figures are traditionally depicted in profile with blue masks, as such in this rug. In weavings depicting the Yei spirits, male deities are generally pictured with round heads and female deities with square heads, as in this rug.  In Navajo mythology, the YEI spirits were believed to control natural elements such as rain, snow, wind, and sun. Yei's mediated between the GREAT spirit and gave the humans many advices about life on earth before leaving them. One Navajo belief that the YEI are the creators of the first man and woman, and they gave to humans many The name YEI derives from YEIBICHEI, meaning HOLY PEOPLE. Yeibachai rugs depict the ceremony in which dancers attempt to call the spirits.
