Playfully, the author has written the letter 'R' as if to write 'Rat' instead of 'Pat', and then crossed it out. He has also incorporated the 'P' of 'Pat' into the word 'Person' beneath, and crossed out his printed name on the title page, as was his convention when signing.
First UK Edition. Published by Victor Gollancz, London, 1985. Octavo hardback, with dustjacket. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine title. Measures approx. 9.25" x 6.25" (23.5cm x 15.5cm). 379pp.
Dustjacket has some handling, with very minor occasional rubbing to extremities and a small scuff at upper fore corner of rear jacket panel, though this is all quite innocuous. There's some narrow surface indentation here and there; though again, this is nothing too offensive, and can only be seen under angled light. Not price clipped. Closed edges are tanned, with one or two small marks here and there, and there's general tanning to inner leaves throughout, which is more pronounced towards margin edges, commensurate with age and paper type. The half-title page is showing some light partial ghosting, as though a hand-written letter or similar has been stored between the leaves at some juncture. The 2pp afterword leaves at the end of the book each have small loss of circa 3mm at the lower fore corner. Binding is sound throughout. Remains a good original example.
