Early 20th century Thai bronze buddha figure of Phra Sangkajai (Maha Katyayana). - most probably Rattanakosin King Rama VI Period (1910-1925) or earlier - a fine quality patinated hollow bronze casting.

This Thai depiction of the Lord Buddha's disciple, renowned for his excellence in teaching the dharma; in the form of a fat monk similar to hotei or budai; sits with folded arms and crossed legs on lotus base; distingtive features include -extended earlobes; urna on forehead and tight curled hair, the hint of a smile and downcast expresstion capture the inner calm of Buddhahood and awakened blissful happiness; according to Thai folklore, Mahakatyayana (Thai: Sangkajai) was extremely sought after for his looks, so he transformed himself into a fat monk to avoid distraction from the arhat path. 

Condition: age-wear to patination, otherwise good uncleaned condition.
