Sketches of Negro Life and History in South Carolina by Asa H. Gordon...

Extremely Rare!  First Edition. Good Condition. Some wear on the front boards from use over the last 95 years in the same family home. The inside first page has a slight separation at the bottom and along the gutter.  A few dog eared pages, but otherwise no markings on the pages and no rips or tears.  (See pictures)

This book was inscribed by the Author to Miss Blondell Williams on Christmas Day 1928 (prior to the actual 1929 publication date)
Miss Williams went on to become Mrs. Blondell W. Stewart and settled with her husband in Hendersonville, TN.  They had a son Preston Stewart, Jr who lived in the same home upon his retirement till his death.

This book remained in the Stewart family possession from that Christmas Day in 1928 till an estate sale in 2023 when I obtained it.

The letter in the pics from Asa Gordon to renowned black writer W.E.B. Du Bois is included to show handwriting for Asa Gordon and that it matches the Author’s inscription to Miss Williams.

The other books of this title currently available are 2nd editions (mostly paperback).  I have seen one other first edition and it was listed substantially higher on another site earlier this year.
