Truly, one of a kind. Absolutely stunning skill exhibited in this hand carved linocut by listed MCM artist Mar Carter. I have several more by her but this is the crowning glory of her linocutting skills. Mar Carter was an artist in Chicago (1922-2011) who was a contemporary of both Eugene Deutsch and Edna Arnow during the period of Chicago Modernism in the postwar years. Mar Carter, who was an award winning member of the Chicago Society of Artists and participated in several exhibits in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

It appears never to have been inked and is in excellent condition. She created it in two pieces, perhaps they were to make a menu cover for the restaurant, Boston Mountain Lodge, once located in Mountainburg Arkansas, or couldve been done as a student. In any case, this is a truly outstanding display of skill, considering Carter was eventually known for her ceramics.

Each piece is 8 x 10” and about 3/4” thick and they are done in reverse so that when printed the lettering reads the correct way. I’ve flipped the second photo so you can read it better. On the back of one of them is a stamp of where she bought the blocks from: The Brudno Art Supply Co. 601 N State St, Chicago Illinois (Cant read what it says under that)
