Hall Coffee Canister Repaired Lid Radiance Shape Chinese Red Art Glaze 1933-1970
A beautiful HALL China RADIANCE CANISTER COFFEE w/REPAIRED LID, ART GLAZE CHINESE RED on Ivory w/No Trim, circa 1933-1970, from East Liverpool, Ohio, USA
DESCRIPTION: We found this beautiful radiance coffee canister with a repaired lid in our search for other Hall pieces for our collection, but we don't collect canisters! This canister has the art glaze color of chinese red. This is such a beauty and the overall quality of the design is quite professional.
CONDITION: While this canister is classified as used, canister condition is superb while the lid has definite problems. Sometime in the long ago past, the lid was dropped and broken into 5 pieces, then “repaired” with tape & perhaps glue. It appears solid and looks good from a distance. There is no other damage or defects. We can find no chips, nicks, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or other repairs. There is no wear to the art glaze color and (of course) no crazing. Please carefully inspect the photos to see how good the condition of this canister is.
DIMENSIONS: The canister has a diameter of 5 1/2" and a height of 7 5/8" to the top of the lid.
HISTORY/MARKS: When the East Liverpool Potteries Company was dissolved in 1903, Robert Hall, one of the principals, formed Hall China Company. After his untimely death in 1904, his young son, Robert Taggert Hall took over and made it his mission to rediscover the long lost process from the Ming Dynasty of producing a non-lead based glazed china using a single fire process. He succeeded by 1911 creating the craze-proof finish for which Hall China became famous for over 100 years. Hall China remained in the extended Hall family until they were sold to Homer Laughlin China Company across the river in Newell, West Virginia, the manufacturer of Fiesta. Hall China is not in production today as their operating kilns have been moved to Newell and most of the original facility on Anna Avenue is being demolished. The stamp on the bottom of this is the Hall China Company stamp cited in Margaret & Kenn Whitmyer 's book Collector's Encyclopedia of Hall China as Hall’s Superior Quality Kitchenware (HSQK) stamp #6 used 1932-1970. The radiance shape was introduced in 1933. This sets the circa as 1933-1970.
