There's something very familiar about it, and something that's really not. Our original Real Deal Brazil recycled-tarp hat is sort of like a fedora, sort of like an Aussie Outback hat -- except after a full day spent atop Indiana Jones as he's being beaten and dragged to within an inch of his life.

From color shifts to wild and jagged stitching, ragged patches, stains, frays, punctures and even occasional ink marks, every uncommon characteristic of our Original RDB hat hints at the story of its prior life as a lonely truck tarp, and its rough journeys through harsh elements in the starkly shifting climates of Brazil. It's such a cool history for a hat to have that we actually print a short version of it inside each crown!

Our original Real Deal recycled-tarp hat is handcrafted in a remote town in equatorial Brazil, where recycling actually informs nearly every aspect of production, from the salvaged tarp scraps being applied as patches on other hats right down to the heavy wire hidden within each brim. That thin band of steel, reclaimed from trash-bound old truck tires, adds yet another element of uniqueness, allowing you to shape your own pretty much any way you please.

Patches, patches

Patches are a very desirable characteristic of The Real Deal. They truly add uniqueness to each and every hat. Some are small and some are large; some take up complete sections of the hat. They can also appear on the brim or the crown of the hat. Patches came come in a variety of colors and aren't necessarily the same color as the original tarp.

The Real Deal is made in Brazil of recycled canvas tarpaulins from cargo trucks used for transporting goods. Every hat is truly one of a kind as no two are the same. Each hat has its own unique character. Made from various colors of tarp, these hats may have patches, seams, holes, or even Portuguese writing. These hats are hand sewn by Brazilian villagers and reflect the true craftsmanship of the locals.
Because the tarpaulins were designed to protect its contents from the rough elements in Brazil, they make perfect covers to shield your cabeça (that's head in Portuguese) from the hot summer sun. Every characteristic of The Real Deal tells a story of its prior life lived as a lonely truck tarp and reveals its journeys through the harsh elements in equatorial Brazil. It’s not often I get wolf-whistled in the street, at least not by a group of school girls, but that’s exactly what happened when I wore the Real Deal Hat they kindly sent me. The hat that is made in Brazil out of recycled canvas tarpaulins from cargo trucks used for transporting goods. Inside the hat it tells me that most likely the fabric has traveled from the Amazon to Sao Paulo and back. It looks like it too, pretty filthy, but in a cool, rugged way.

I like the fact it’s making use of recycled tarp. The package came flat, so saved waste on delivery packaging. The hat is tough, so just popped into shape.

Every hat is truly one of a kind as obviously no two tarps are the same. I’m not a big hat wearer, but actually think it’s kinda cool. Maybe I’ll stick to wearing it out in the back garden though!
