There are so many of these on the market now, made in China. Not the case here: the handle and the blade are both made in the USA. Supplied NON-STERILE for hobby & craft use only! The blade is ultra-sharp and it can only be used a few times before it becomes worn and "ordinary". At this price however, this product can almost be considered "disposable". NOTE: These scalpels were originally designed for "one time use" - the blade was not designed to be changed out so its firmly attached. However, it is possible to remove and replace the blade (its not easy, but it can be done). Replacement Scalpel blades can be purchased from other sellers on ebay so the metal handles can be reused indefinitely.

As you can see in the picture the blades are protected with a disposable plastic guard.
