Fist lineup although lasted for only two studio albums, included Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald , Michael Giles , Greg Lake ( soon to be ELP member ) and poet Peter Sinfield.

In the Court of the Crimson King "Nella Corte dei King Crimson" (anche intitolato In the Court of the Crimson King: An Observation by King Crimson), pubblicato il 10 Ottobre del 1969, è l'album di debutto del gruppo rock Inglese dei King Crimson. L'album ha raggiunto il numero cinque sulle classifiche Inglesi, ed ha ottenuto il gold Certified negli Stati Uniti, dove ha raggiunto il posto # 28 nella Billboard 200.

L'album è generalmente considerato come una delle prime opere che incarnano veramente il genere rock progressivo, dove i King Crimson ,in gran parte allontanatosi dalle influenze blues in cui la musica rock era fondata,hanno mescolato insieme jazz e altri elementi sinfonici classici. Nel suo libro del 1997, Rocking the Classics, il critico e musicologo Edward Macan osserva che - In the Court of the Crimson King - "può essere considerato il più influente album di rock progressive mai rilasciato".Pete Townshend, dei The Who, è stato citato come chiamare l'album "un capolavoro perturbante ". In Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog rock, l'album risulta essere il quarto nella lista dei "40 Cosmic Rock Albums". Inoltre l'album è stato nominato dal Classic Rock magazine's come uno dei "50 Albums That Built Prog Rock" - "50 albums che hanno costruito il rock Progressivo".
 

I King Crimson sono un gruppo musicale rock Britannico, fondato nel 1969 a Londra. Spesso classificati come un gruppo prettamente progressive, durante il corso della loro esistenza hanno subito le influenze di diversi generi musicali, tra i quali: jazz, folk, musica classica, musica sperimentale, rock psichedelico, hard rock, heavy metal, new wave, gamelan, musica elettronica e drum and bass. Nello stesso tempo, però, i King Crimson sono riusciti ad influenzare molti artisti contemporanei, creando nel tempo una sorta di culto attorno al loro nome.
