A beautiful, original Harman Percy Marble photograph of the Sioux Tribe.
Circa 1940's and measures 5" x 7".
Features a man on the left holding a cane and he is wearing bells on his legs for dancing. There are two men next to him and they are holding eagle wing fans and a cane, the man in the center is wearing a bone breast plate and he is holding a Navajo blanket around his lower torso. Next you will see three men who are wearing leggings made of trade cloth. The man 2nd from the right is wearing an otter skin sash with mirrors and is wearing bells on his legs.
This photograph is good condition. There is a crease in the bottom center to the upward middle.
Harman Percy Marble was born in 1870 in Pawnee County, Nebraska and passed away in 1945. He was known as a creative photographer of Native Americans, which many of the photographs were of the Navajo, Menominee and Sioux Tribes during his Government career and Mayor of Las Vegas. In 1911 he sold his paper, The Humboldt Leader and joined the Government Indian Service. He was assigned to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Menominee Reservation in Wisconsin, the Sikoux Tribes of Fort Thompson, South Dakota and the Southern Pueblos of Albuquerque, New Mexico and eventually returned to Arizona and then he lived out his years in Las Vegas Nevada. As most people know, these pieces become more beautiful with age because of movements and distress in the woods, some having restoration. Spindle turnings will not be uniform and swell unevenly with age. Wood tends to get stress fractures on support systems and where wide board construction is used. Eighty-five percent of 18th Century veneers have had some restoration during their life. Pine secondary woods might fracture, making overlays and veneers have the same fracture lines. Old finishes might alligator, fade, fish-eye or darken depending on where the pieces were placed. All of these are desired by a true collector and gives it personality. Do not expect these early pieces to be like new. These pieces age gracefully just as we do, giving them unique personality. We do our best to describe and photograph all items thoroughly, but handle a quantity of pieces every day and might miss something. All these antique pieces are sold as is. It is your responsibility to view the photos, review the description, if you wish photos of a specific area on any piece, we are happy to promptly submit them to you and ask any questions you may have before bidding. Selling items untouched, usually directly from Estates, we are not experts on clock works or any items with mechanical or moving parts. We know if they tick, run, move and are in tune with the quality of sound, but offer no guarantees on these items.
