About the Book

Soldier Boys, by MAXWELL N. WAUGH, is a meticulously researched and well illustrated study of the militarisation of Australian and New Zealand Schools prior to World War I. It covers the period from the mid 19th-century up to 1920 and traces the uniquely Australian and New Zealand practices of "voluntary" and "compulsory" cadet training in both government and non-government schools. It shows how schools were used to prepare a ready-made army of well-trained, disciplined and patriotic young men, many who lost their lives in the terrifying battles of World War I. A fascinating study examining the military, legal, political and social influences and impacts of this often forgotten area of military education and schooling. It includes archival photographs, source notes, an extensive bibliography and a detailed index.

This first edition was published in 2014 by Melbourne Books, Melbourne, Australia. It has stiff card covers, contains 270 pages and despite, slight use, it is in very good condition overall.
