Cloth Nappy Washing Instructions
To keep your cloth nappies and products looking as beautiful as the day you opened them, follow our washing and care instructions below.
This will help preserve the quality and extend the life of your nappies.

Before You Start Using Your Cloth Nappies
Similar to the towels or bath towels, pre-washing your cloth nappies is an important step to ensure they reach their maximum absorbency before using on bubs.

We recommend you wash them between 3-5 times on a full length cycle,
no hotter than 60 degrees.
If short on time, you could also soak inserts overnight and then wash both inserts & covers on a warm cycle no hotter than 60 degrees.

Simply use a standard dose of laundry detergent with your wash cycle. And make sure your nappies are fully dried between each wash.

Dirty Cloth Nappies
Depending on the deposit your little one has left behind,
here’s what to do with each type of dirty cloth nappy:

Pee only: Saturate with cold water under the tap, and place in a dry pail.
Newborn poo (breastfed or bottle fed): Saturate with cold water under the tap, and place in a dry pail.
Solid poo: Tip solids from the nappy and into the toilet. Saturate with cold water under the tap, and place in a dry pail.

Washing Cloth Nappies
It is important to wash your dirty nappies every 1-2 days. Leaving them any longer will encourage the growth of bacteria and mould.

Step 1: Start by washing nappies and inserts on a warm pre-rinse cycle.
This gets rid of any excess urine or soiling before the wash cycle.
Step 2: Follow with a warm, regular/long wash cycle, no hotter than 60 degrees.
Wash with the correct amount of detergent recommended by your detergent manufacturer for the water level / load size.

An note on detergent:
We choose to use a natural detergent on the nappies as we believe it’s better for the environment

We do recommend that no matter which washing detergent you choose, it should not contain bleach, fabric softeners, whiteners or vinegar pre-rinse, particularly when used on soiled nappies. When used regularly, these chemicals can reduce the lifespan of the PUL, elastics & bamboo fabrics in your nappies.

Drying Cloth Nappies
Our nappies and bamboo inserts are best dried outside on a washing line. If you don’t have a suitable outdoor area for drying, simply hang indoors on a drying rack near a window exposed to sunlight. UV rays from sunlight (not direct sunshine) will help remove stains naturally.

If you do choose to use a tumble dryer (or it’s been raining for days and you have no choice), then separate the nappy covers from the inserts and dry in two separate loads.

Nappy covers should be dried on a low temperature as excessively, hot temperatures can cause the fabric to delaminate. Cloth nappy inserts will take a little longer to dry since this is the absorbent part of the nappy, so you can tumble dry these on a medium heat.

Drying tips:

Those hanging dryers with attached pegs (that you would usually use for socks or undies) are amazing for drying cloth nappy inserts and boosters. And if at the end of the day your inserts aren’t quite dry yet, simply bring the whole hanger inside to finish them off without having to unpeg and repeg everything! It makes the job super quick and easy.

We also love drying our cloth nappy covers on a portable clothes airer. They’re really fast to hang and often don’t need pegs at all (unless it’s windy). And if you don’t have much sun at your house, simply move the airer around to catch the light and breeze without having to take all of the covers off and rehang.
